Elective Egg Freezing (EEF)

1 What is Elective Egg Freezing?

Elective egg freezing, also known as oocyte cryopreservation, is a process where a woman’s eggs are frozen for future use. This option is considered by women who wish to preserve their fertility due to various reasons, such as:

  • Delaying pregnancy for personal or professional reasons
  • Medical conditions that may affect fertility
  • Lack of a partner

2 The EEF Process

A). Consultation: A fertility specialist will assess your medical fitness, ovarian reserve and discuss the process.

B). Ovarian Stimulation: Medications are used to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs.

C). Egg Retrieval: Eggs are retrieved through a minor surgical procedure.

D). Freezing: Eggs are frozen using a process called vitrification.

3  MOH Guidelines

According to the Ministry of Health (MOH) guidelines on Assisted Reproduction Technology, EEF is allowed for women:

  • Aged 21 to below 38 years: Women within this age range can consider EEF.

4 Important Considerations

  • Age: Egg quality and quantity decline with age, affecting success rates.
  • Cost: EEF can be expensive, and costs usually will not be covered by insurance.
  • Success Rates: The success of EEF and subsequent Embryo Transfers depend on various factors, including age and egg quality.

5 Next Steps

If you’re considering EEF, consult a fertility specialist to discuss your options and determine the best course of action for your individual circumstances.
